You know, the practice of medicine is stressful and often very frustrating. It’s an art more than a science and we in the practice don’t always agree. We sometimes have difficulties with administrations, patients, patient families, oversight organizations (i.e. Joint Commission, Medicare, insurance companies) and other physicians. As is customary, we always strive to remain professional in our practice but, hey, we’re human–right? Sometimes it feels like we’re not allowed to be.
The purpose of this blog is to take things to the opposite extreme, leaving as much professionalism on the back burner as possible. With it I plan to: 1. Ventilate in ways I would never feel comfortable doing with my peers or my patients. 2. Educate, albeit most likely about the things I consider stupid in my medical practice and my daily life. 3. Advocate my personal beliefs/opinions, be they medical or political. 4. Entertain (at least myself).
I think you’ll find much of the issues I bring up justified at least, frequently important/worth consideration, and occasionally just absurdly over the top (for my entertainment only). I promise my presentation will be as unprofessional, “sit on the couch after a couple beers” real, as possible.
Please leave whatever comments/input you desire, and opposing points of view are always welcome. Do not ask me about personal stuff (my boss is not going to be as entertained by this stuff as I am) but here’s some of my background:
I’m over 50 and have been practicing medicine for over 20 years in the United States where a graduated from a pretty well known medical school. I’ve travelled around the world, was corporate medical director for a large emergency physician staffing company, met with a US president over public healthcare and physician medical malpractice concerns, participated in political advocacy to improve healthcare and promote tort reform. I am fully boarded and skilled in internal medicine, emergency medicine and hospital medicine.
Okay, with that, lets get rude–but one more thing: don’t give me crap for spelling, I can’t and I don’t have to ’cause I’m a frickin doctor!
Just happened to come across your site while serivng on my day off. I am a fellow ED physician and absolutely find your comments refreshing. It is enlightening to know that other professionals also have they say thoughts and beliefs. Just wanted to let you know I enjoyed your site it is actually theurapeutic. MK
